The only mistake we did was we trusted them as good travel agency and applied for the Singapore tourist visas. Lemme narrate it chronologically:
When I went to them for the first time they said yes they process the visa and very much experienced in it. It will take maximum a week to get it done. As per them we have to apply within a month of travel to Singapore as per the Singapore tourist visa rules. So I decided to apply 1 month within the travel dates and asked the agent fee plus all the required documents. He told me the docs and promised me to email the visa form to fill up.
Week 1: I returned from there after that and got involved in arranging all the requested docs. The travel agent could email me the docs after 3 days when I kept on reminding him twice a day over the phone. Anyways, I ignored it as anyhow I was busy in arranging docs. Finally on 6th day I went to Thomas cook office, madhapur, Hyderabad and found that guy was on leave. His colleagues asked me to come on Monday.
Week 2: I went on Monday again found him absent on Monday as well. Afrer another 2 days of struggle finally i could catch him in office. He looked at the docs and told me few corrections in 1-2 docs. I returned and took a day and went to office again. The travel agent was absent for some unknown period of time. One of his colleague told me that I can give the doc to him and he will handover. I thought it is fine and asked him to verify throughly. He did the same and wrote on my receipt as "docs verified" and signed it. He said he will send it that day itself and I should get it within 5 days.
Week 3: I spend the whole week with assurance in mind that I should get it by Saturday. On Saturday evening around 6 pm I got a call from Thomas cook office which I could not receive. At night when I saw the missed call I thought they would have called me to pick the visas. I thought of doing it on Monday.
Week 4: Monday morning at 10 am I called them to ask if I can come and they shocked me saying docs are not complete and they need marriage certificate and photos with Matt finish. That's just crap I bursted on them that you don't know even that basic requirements and said me a week ago that all is fine. The most annoying response was Singapore embassy keeps on changing requirements so it's not their fault. I asked show me anywhere that marriage certificate and photo quality requirement change even in last 6 months for which he had no answer. I went to their office and told them be sure again as I don't have that much time left to arrange some more docs if you will come back to me saying some more docs are still needed. Another foolish response from the agent was we can return your fee we took for processing the visa. I asked if that is what they work for and matters to me? For which he was again answerless. I spend one more day getting the marriage certificate and desired type of photos and gave him crossing my fingers.
Week 5 (final week when we had to travel): on Monday I got a call that visas are in the office and I can collect them. I went to their office and found that guy is sure that docs are there but no idea where they are kept. He searched for half and hour and could not find. I decided to talk to the manager of hitch branch and with his intervention they finally traced a person who kept the docs in a locker and having keys with him. The person came to office in an hour and handed me the docs. I opened the docs for the verification and found that only my wife's passport has e-visa attached to it. Mine was missing. And i got the same annoying response that they have no idea and will find from their chennai office. They asked me to go back and they will get back to me. I thought that's a bad idea keeping I have just 4 days in hand. I waited there for things to progress. After wasting my half day there one of the chennai guys told me that he will give me a call in an hour. Since hyderabad office had no role to play so I decided to go back to office. After an hour I gave a call to them and in another 3-4 back and forth calls they emailed me my e-visa.
That's simply horrible and I would have loose a lot of money if I would have delayed my visa process even by a week. The best thing that happened in the entire process was I did not trust them to process it I a week and applied it 5 weeks earlier. Must say never go to Thomas cook for any sort of visa processing or travel arrangements. They almost burned our plans while cooking it.

Update 1: Thomas cook customer care replied me that they cannot view external web posts etc. so I just copy pasted it to the email.

Cafe Coffee Day - A coffee without a smile...

Few days back I visited with my gal to a Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) at canaught place, new delhi. While seated we noticed a big poster saying if your coffee comes without a smile take it free. And we just discussed if the coffee guy will really place it with a smile....

And this did not happen... Taking it lightly while paying at the counter as were in a bit hurry I told the person at billing counter that you guys announce to provide free coffee in case it misses a smile and was surprised to see an ignorant gesture.

I was just thinking that its better to try to apply such things without a publicity. For me this incident bought down the CCD's image...

Hyderabad Central Put Customers in the Corner

Yesterday, I went to one of the oldest Shopping Mall 'Hyderabad Central' in punjagutta. I bought a wrist watch and there was an offer to get microwave bowls of worth 2000 by paying only 450.

I was anyhow feeling the need of that stuff so decided to buy. So here are the seriously annoying things that turned my mood off.

1. The titan outlet from where I bought the watch told they do not carry even the Titan cover to wrap it and only Hyderabad Central printed cover can be provided. That too from the billing counter.

2. Once I went to billing counter to collect the cover and asked for buying the micowave bowls as per offer he asked me to go to 3rd floor for that. That sounded me bad to un-necessary route the customer.

3. Anyways, I went there and found just one person trying to help out everyone and in a way resulting in annoying everyone. Not the fault of the person but the management to keep just one person where they know more will be required. Where you can imagine to complain for such things when that happens within customer care center.

4. After some struggle I finally got the stuff for which they did not provided me the bill. I did not realized it as I was in hurry. I have to gift it so asked for the gift wrap for which they directed me to go to basement. What a pain to just move up and down for buying a single item. To make a note Hyderabad Central pretty proudly announces that they believe in customer satisfaction. I found it completely missing.

5. With no choice I went to basement and asked the person to gift wrap. And the awesome reply was "Sir, we do not gift wrap complementary items". I was pretty annoyed and said boss I have paid 450 bucks for this. Then how it is complementary? He did not listen for the same for first 10 mins and then finally said ok show me the bill for this. Asking for the bill made sense to me but this should have been the first response from him. There I realized that the customer care did not gave me the bill at all. So, I asked him to pack it and put the bill number for the watch I bought. He said he need to ask for that. I said sure and for which he said I do not have any phone/intercom to call to customer care and he cannot leave the desk. As per him, in fact on the entire floor there is no intercom even for emergency situations.

6. This finally made me another trip to 3rd floor to get the bill for which the person was simply not surprised and gave me a bill. In fact he asked: "Why? Is someone asking for it?". This was pretty unexpected to me. They are supposed to provide the bill even if customer does not ask and the guy was asking me a question like why I need that. This is just against the law which Hyderabad central seems to be violating frequently.

Make My Trip -- Break My Trip

So, this is a very annoying incident happened recently when I had mistakenly planned to book my trip using www.makemytrip.com.
My 4 relatives were planning to travel from Delhi to Banglore and asked me to help out in bookings. I went ahead and did a booking. Few hours later when I went to print the itinerary I realized I did a wrong booking and booked from Delhi to Hyderabad instead of Delhi to Banglore. As I am living in hyderabad for last 4+ years so kinda of easy to digest mistake for me. Anyways, so there was option other than canceling the ticket and wasting 3250 as cancellation charges and booking the right tickets. So, to cancel I logged on to makemytrip.com once again and tried to cancel. System refused me to do so as there was an infant traveling. For any reasons I did not bother much and thought to do that later online.
So, I just decided to book the correct tickets again and I did so. After this I had finally 2 itineraries one from Delhi to Banglore (the correct one) and the another from Delhi to Hyderabad (to be cancelled via customer care). I called to customer care and they took almost an hour to final attend my call. I told them the situation and asked them to cancel the itinerary from Delhi to Hyderabad. After spending some 20 minutes the care guy told me it is done.

Few hours later, I went to cyber cafe to get a printout of the Del-Blr itinerary for the next day scheduled departure. And was shocked to see that the customer care guy Canceled the wrong tickets. I had to call to customer care again and had to wait for about more than an hour to be attended. Customer Care replied that they cannot do anything at the moment but if its a mistake from their side then they will pay back the cancellation charges plus the fare difference between the wrongly canceled flight and the next booking for the same flight by me. Fair enough. I disconnected.

And, after this I waited for 10 days for amount to be paid back by Break (make) my trip and found only the fare returned after deducting the cancellation charges. This made me loss 3250 as the cancellation fee and around 2500 increased fare for booking the same flight again. I called to customer care (must mention same 1 hr wait time on phone) to know about the status of my complaint number IN0910R0064497 and found that they are still not sure about that. I repeated the incidence and they assured to get back within 2 hours. After waiting for another 3 days I had to call again to know about it again to suffer again for another hour in the wait queue to get another assurance of refunding money within another 2-3 days.
That did not end here and I had to call Break My Trip again (this time with a wait time of 2 hours) finally with another assurance of refunding it within 10 days. I patiently waited for that much time again and finally forced to write this blog so that other people make sure not to book through makemytrip.com for any reasons.
Few very annoying things:
1. Wait time of over 1 hours in the call.
2. Just asking the incidence freshly from the customer even after providing the complaint number. Which they should bother to open and go through.
3. Definitely the repetitive assurance for refunding money.
4. And, false promises to call back in 2 hours and never do that.

Update 1: Finally after a month of struggle they returned my money. Was such a pain. Guys be careful !!!

La belle Poor Services with Extremely Poor Attitude

Last week I went to La Belle (http://www.labelle.in) in banjara hills branch, Hyderabad to try our their facial services as I got a gift coupon from shopper's stop. It was a great disappointment to be there...

Here is what I found seriously bad:

1. Chairs used for treatment were too uncomfortable and I guess my small home town (Bhiwani) hair saloon s has got much better chairs.

2. The person who was doing the treatment kept on pausing the facial session just to talk about his mobile issues with someone coming in the room (might be his colleague).

3. They have made the facial bed just under the AC and requesting to raise the temperature or switching off is considered for just few minutes and then it is put back to the original state.

4. They talked to me about a tan bleach treatment to be done on face and back. Here, I understand the meaning of word 'back' something entirely different than they meant. They meant by it the back side of neck. Simply ridiculous to pay 750 for putting a bleach cream for less 2 min on face and neck and wiping it off saying you just spend 750.

5. Anyhow when I came out of the session and ask for the feedback, the receptionist asked "was it good?" And I replied "It was pathetic". She pointed to me the feedback form and moved back to whatever she was doing.

Latest updates: Today morning I got a call from La belle asking how was the experience and I told I am not satisfied. I did not get the value for my money. And the reply was: "oh sorry, any suggestions for the improvements?". I said bullshit and cut the call.

So, a must not go place...

Update 1: Got another Call from Banjara Hills Branch to offer complimentary services with apology and to make me happy. They told that they will terminate the staff and want me to come once again for the complete satisfaction. I agreed.

Update 2: I got an email from La belle customer care as well asking for the account number to refund the whole amount. This was interesting but confused me that they are going to refund the amound and providing complementary service as well or its a new decision. Anyways, I immediately replied with my account details. Will update on further happenings.

Update 3: Got one more call from La belle banjara hills branch for visiting to them again. I did it this time and they apologized for the issues and offered me to go through any service I like. They insisted to take some more services absolutely free of cost. This was really awesome and a great gesture from the branch supervisor. I was given a special attention and someone kept monitoring on how the things are going on in every 5-10 min. I loved it and realized that they really mean business.

Indigo - Secret of running low cost

So, here is a fresh incident when on oct 22 I was traveling from Delhi to Hyderabad between 8:30 to 10:30 PM through Indigo Airlines. Around half way when crew announced about the meals to be served who pre-ordered for that. All of a sudden I too started feeling hungry. I was traveling after about 6 months to a domestic airline so was even surprised to know that now it is required to tell about food requirement at the time of ticket booking (still not sure).

Anyways, I was still sure that they must be having some extra stuff for me. So, I pressed the button and asked the hostess who attended me if anything veg is available. And she replied to get back on that. She was pretty quick and with a charming smile told 'parantha' is available but it's cold. Thinking better to have some acidity because of a cold stuff rather a hot starvation I said yes please give me that.

I don't blame airlines to charge ridiculously high these days so agreed for a price of 120 bucks as menu indicated and gave a Rs 500 note. She took the note and replied she is not having enough change and will return in some time (of course with a smile :). I was fine with that and so went back to relax for rest of the time. I kind of forgot about the remaining money as I was assure not to worry about it. Guess what? She did not return to me at all which I realized just after getting down.

On my side the fault was trusting to get the change back and kind of forgetting about it. But should this really be expected from the airlines staff? It's simply not ethical and definitely not the right way to manage business running on low costs :D

Trip for a lifetime

Wow those 3 days full of life. Every moment full of energy. May be i can recall where it started but not possible to say if it ever ended. So many things so many experiences all for a good reason conspired to fall in those 3 short days. Looks like even a blink takes more time than those days could survive. It's fun and more than enough even if a single first taste sets you on cloud 9 and here it was a treasure of first time everlasting experiences.

Hard to beat the adrenal rushing in the blood when chopper inclines by 80 degrees to change the direction. That 2 min ride at Hoover dam for mere 29$ was worth winning a 20 million jackpot at ph casinos in Vegas. Even before this mesmerizing experience there was a lot that happened to add the colors on this trip. I voluntarily skipped my SFO to LA flight for 320$ southwest airlines offer.

Anyways back to the Hoover dam from where we headed to grand canyon. I was not sure before reaching what exactly the place is for and I was not even willing to ask to take it a surprise. As we approached towards the canyon it reminded me of my last years great trip with Oliver to Yosemite national parks. However last 20 Miles ride was pretty rough to canyon due to under construction roads. And finally when reached it was albeit rainy over there. By the time we reached for the skywalk it already started raining. It was really an added joy to look into the infinity from the skywalk 5 layered glass floor. Sahar, Athar, n Kiran were not in mood to get
drenched so walked quickly over the sky missing almost everything American tourism estimated $60 per head. N there were two fun loving souls on the glass floor along with worried Nayab for her hairs getting straightened due to rain. It was a divine experience for the evils roaring in joy leaving no one else but 3.j But for the high risk of lightning we were forced to leave the skywalk by care takers. We took pics like crazy over there and finally headed for camping which was a 4 hours drive. After covering more than 70% distance we realized that may be we are too tired for the camping. That said within 5 min we took a u-turn towards Vegas. It was already around 9 so thought to have dinner and look for a motel to stay overnight. Pizza hut had good veggies to feed us and Marriott had good mattresses to let us fell unconscious. Kiran's $70 saving on armed official discount made it a great deal.

And then there was a lovely morning, and the shouts from Vegas pulling us to dive into a all new world set to spark a spot in the deserts of Arizona. We reached to Vegas around 2pm and looked for an Indian cuisine. Himayalya Indian cum Nepalese cuisine was descent and much higher than my expectations in taste. We already had a booking in hotel Rinahossence in Vegas that I would say was a lavish hotel with a fascinating large indoor 24hrs pool n spa. We were in no mood waste time to pamper our laziness so did a quick check in and moved out of hotel leaving Vicky.

Looks like the night at Vegas deserves a whole new post to mention those precious moments full of energy shouting "whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas"

Creating smart lists in Remeber the milk

Recently I started using a fablous TO-DO manager called Remember The Milk (http://rememberthemilk.com) and was stuck at how to create a list which has tasks as per my
criteria.

There are various criteria attributes in RTM like by list, due date, complete/uncompleted status, tag, location, priority etc.

So, to create a smart list what you need to do is to first enter your requirement as a search criteria in the search box. For example say you want to create all the task in list "work" which were completed in last one week then you need to search: completedWithin:"one week of today" and list:"work"

As soon as you do that your will see an option to save it as a smart list. A very pleasant environment full of life... Few were moving here and there.. some were sitting under the sun-shine and few were sitting alone reading newspaper or just sitting idle.

I moved inside the NGO premises looking for the administration block or some care taker. And, the reason was to get a chance to interact with them and to do something for them. I had a very clear intention, built by the last night Sakshum's meeting with Janish, Vinayaka, Ajeet and Neeti. That is to find a way for serving these people for their needs. Certainly, we had no money to donate but we were willing to build a long term relationship with such organizations and help them as much as we can.

Anyways, I asked an old man there about the office and he directed me. I moved some 200 meters in the suggested direction and found a block indicating Office. I went inside and peeped in to one of the rooms there. An old lady and an old man were sitting there. They invited me inside. I introduced my self as Vivek, a volunteer of Sakshum. I said "Sakshum is a group of 8-10 dedicated people who are committed to do something good for the society".

She introduced herself as a manager over there and oriented me about old age home. She told me that they are serving around 95 aged people here. She told me, as such they don't need any volunteer services. they are just in short of budget and looking for that. If you guys can help us then we will buy emergency lights and printer for our computer. I was a lil shocked at the reply "as such we don't need any volunteer services..." . But, I was kept listening. She told me that they had good libraries there, full time employees for the care of the residents. But, for all these maintenance they need good money. She continued that they were no profit no loss organization so, they rely on donations only.

I was feeling quite bad the way she was using the word money or donation in her every sentence. I had an impression that probably they don't charge anything from residents. To confirm I asked her that so you don't charge anything from the old people here? And, the reply was..." Nothing is free here...they all pay on monthly basis from their pensions or earned interest from their deposited money in banks etc." I was really thinking hard that what sort of NGO it was? Just a name which is used for extracting money in terms of donations, land from govt and, govt employees for care taking etc.

She asked me about my contact details and said we would contact us in case they need some help. She thanked me for visiting.. I showed my interest about interacting with the people there. She told.. no not required as such as they were already intellectual people and had their own groups. I said fine and came back.

On the way, back to home I was just thinking about it and lost my focus from driving... After I reached home, I called to Janish, Ajeet and others and told about the incidence. Finally, we dropped the plan to visi the old age home in the evening..

Even after sharing this experience a number of times to all the Sakshum volunteers I was still not able to come out of it and thought for blogging....

I am really hurt.. that how things could be exploited on the name of social services....

Happy Independence Day

Think before You Seek an Internal Transfer

If you think you can’t go wrong in an organization where you’ve worked for a substantial amount of time, then you’ve got another thing coming! As you need to do as much homework for an internal transfer in a company, as you normally would while applying for a job in another organization.

This is sad but true but you must find out about the boss. Most companies do not have one culture but a combination of different cultures. The sub-culture is often influenced by the person heading the specific department that you wish to join.

In certain departments face-time may be essential. Which means for e.g., that you might like working in the HR department where you could leave for home on time after doing your bit for the day; but once you join a department like finance you might be expected to sit till late on an everyday basis. Know such fine point before you think about moving vertically.

More than asking, getting a transfer is about a detailed research. Does the group where you want to work have an opening? And the important thing - do your skills complement the skills set required for the new job?

Remember, a role change is not about escaping your current role but about growing in the organization. If you are struggling in your current role, you may find it tough in another role as well. So do detailed checks – and remember the grass is always green on the other side!

Be clear why you want that particular role. Demonstrate how you have interacted with that department by outlining the challenges involved. The vendor encouraged him to set up a research project and hire a team of developers. In 1957, the fruits of their labors appeared with the debut of the Fortran programming language.

"Fortran changed how people wrote programs on machines and also changed the way compilers were built," said Frances Allen, fellow emerita at IBM and 2006 recipient of the A.M. Turing Award, in an interview Tuesday. "It was a gigantic step at the time."

Allen's first job on joining IBM Research in 1957 was to teach Fortran to the company's scientists. "They weren't very happy about having to learn a new language," she said, explaining that the scientists were used to hand-coding their programs or working closer to the computer's machine code.

Fortran gave scientists and engineers a higher-level, precise language based on familiar algebra formulas in which to write programs. Not only did the new language simplify sharing code, but also made it much easier for scientists to express the solutions to the problems they'd programmed the computer to solve.

Most important, the performance of problems coded in Fortran running on computers was "exceedingly good," better than that of hand-coded programs, Allen said. "John knew that for Fortran to be accepted it had to perform at least as well as hand-coded programs," she added. "That was his stated goal -- to do that every time, and he achieved it."

Fortran was adopted very quickly and became the programming language of choice for the engineering and scientific communities for many years and is still in use today. The influence of the compiler that Backus and his team built as part of Fortran back in 1957 can still be seen today in the way compilers are designed, Allen said.

Post-Fortran, Backus worked with Danish computer scientist Peter Naur to develop a notation to describe the structure of programming languages, dubbed the Backus-Naur form. The notation acts in the same way as grammar for a language like English. Instead of formalizing the definition of verbs, nouns and adjectives, the Backus-Naur form formalizes the notation of variables and operators.

For his Fortran work, Backus won a number of awards, including a National Medal of Science in 1975 and the 1977 Turing Award from the Association for Computing Machinery.

Backus remained with IBM until he retired from the company in 1991.

Backus was a bit of a maverick, wearing jeans to work and to events at a time when most IBM staff dressed more formally, Allen said. "He was a very precise person, but not a fuss," she added. "He was always seeking to understand things better and was always interested in new ideas. He was a person who was very pleasant to be with. You always had the feeling he was very interested in things around him."

According to Allen, Backus liked to relate how in the four years he and his team were working on Fortran, he'd always tell his project manager that the project was six months from completion. "He actively proposed that failures should be rewarded as well as success," Allen said, adding that Backus very much believed in risk-taking to make advances in computing.

Backus died at his home in Ashland, Ore., on Saturday. According to published reports, his family didn't know the cause of his death other than age.

Yesterday.....

yesterday was the day
which i can never forget
as i saw the one in front of me
who was in my dreams yet......

In the crowd of so many unknown faces
who were all running on their own paces
but,my eyes were down and lonely
just absorbedin thoughts of beibg lonely fully.....

Suddenly i opened my eyes
i saw a unknown shadow,
in so many unknown faces
there was someone, whom i wanted to know......

I looked at him once more
there was a desire to see him again
i couldnt believe on my eyes
as dreams and reality cant b same......

BUT.......
there was something in him,
that made me to move towards him
to talk,to feel,to know
as he is the one who used to come to my dreams........

hey,wats was that....
he was moving towards me
i could not believe of what
what all i had seen through my eyes.......

those eyes were stars lik sparkling,.
with a handsome look,face charming
my heart beats were uncontrollable
to utter a single word my lips were not able.....

It was the day when i got
one whom my long life i had desired
how can i forget those moments
when in water he set the fire......

Both of us smiled at each other
eyes were saying everything that we couldnt utter
he holded my hand and came closer as he can<!-- D(["mb"," nothing was left to say as words lost their meaning then...... The President of India
“I have three visions for India. In 3000 years of our history, people from all over the world have come and invaded us, captured our lands, conquered our minds. From Alexander onwards. The Greeks, the Turks, the Moguls, the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Dutch, all of them came and looted us, took over what was ours. Yet we have not done this to any other nation. We have not conquered anyone. We have not grabbed their land, their culture, their history and tried to enforce our way of life on them.
Why? Because we respect the freedom of others. That is why my first vision is that of FREEDOM. I believe that India got its first vision of this in 1857, when we started the war of independence. It is this freedom that we must protect and nurture and build on. If we are not free, no one will respect us. My second vision for India is DEVELOPMENT. For fifty years we have been a developing nation. It is time we see ourselves as a developed nation. We are among top 5 nations of the world in terms of GDP. We have 10 percent growth rate in most areas. Our poverty levels are falling. Our achievements are being globally recognized today. Yet we lack the self-confidence to see ourselves as a developed nation, self- reliant and self-assured. Isn’t this incorrect? I have a THIRD vision. India must stand up to the world. Because I believe that, unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us. Only strength respects strength. We must be strong not only as a military power but also as an economic power. Both must go hand-in-hand. My good fortune was to have worked with three great minds. Dr.Vikram Sarabhai of the Dept. of space, Professor Satish Dhawan, who succeeded him and Dr.Brahm Prakash, father of nuclear material. I was lucky to have worked with all three of them closelyand consider this the great opportunity of my life.
I see four milestones in my career:
Twenty years I spent in ISRO. I was given the opportunity to be the project director for India’s first satellite launch vehicle, SLV3. The one that launched Rohini. These years played a very important role in my life of Scientist. After my ISRO years, I joined DRDO and got a chance to be the part of India’s guided missile program. It was my second bliss when Agni met its mission
requirements in 1994. The Dept. of Atomic Energy and DRDO had this tremendous partnership in the recent nuclear tests, on May 11 and 13. This was the third bliss. The joy of participating with my team in these nuclear tests and proving to the world that India can make it, that we are no longer a developing nation but one of them. It made me feel very proud as an Indian. The fact that we have now developed for Agni a re-entry structure, for which we have developed this new material. A Very light material called carbon-carbon. One day an orthopedic surgeon from Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences visited my laboratory. He lifted the material and found it so light that he took me to his hospital and showed me his patients. There were these little girls and boys with heavy metallic calipers weighing over three Kg. each, dragging their feet around. He said to me: Please remove the pain of my patients. In three weeks, we made these Floor reaction Orthosis 300-gram Calipers and took them to the orthopedic center. The children didn’t believe their eyes. From dragging around a three kg. Load on their legs, they could now move around! Their parents had tears in their eyes. That was my fourth bliss!
Why is the media here so negative? Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?
We are the first in milk production.
We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.
We are the second largest producer of wheat.
We are the second largest producer of rice.
Look at Dr. Sudarshan, he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters. I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas
had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture Of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert land into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news. In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime. Why are we so NEGATIVE ? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? We want foreign TVs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign
technology. Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect comes with self-reliance? I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is. She replied: I want to live in a developed India. For her, you and I will have to build this developed India. You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation.
Do you have 10 minutes? Allow me to come back with a vengeance. Got 10 minutes for your country? If yes, then read; otherwise, choice is yours. YOU say that our government is inefficient. YOU say that our laws are too old. YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. YOU say that the phones don’t work, the railways are a joke, The airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination. YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits. YOU say, say and say. What do YOU do about it? Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name - YOURS. Give him a face - OURS. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. In Singapore you don’t throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground Links as they are. You pay $5 (approx. Rs.60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim
Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM. YOU comeback to the Parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity. In Singapore you don’t say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn’t dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai. YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah. YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.650) a month to, “see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else.” YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 km/h) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, “Jaanta hai sala main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so’s son. Take your two bucks and get lost.” YOU wouldn’t chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand. Why
don’t YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why don’t YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an
involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India?
Once in an interview, the famous Ex-municipal commissioner of Bombay, Mr.Tinaikar, had a point to make. “Rich people’s dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place,” he said. “And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels? In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here?” He’s right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility. We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms. We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public. When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child and others, we make loud drawing room Protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? “It’s the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons’ rights to a dowry.” So who’s going to change the system? What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbors, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually
making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr. Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away. Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England. When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money. Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one’s conscience too....I am echoing J.F.Kennedy’s words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians.....
“ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY”
Lets do what India needs from us. Forward this mail to each Indian for a change instead of sending Jokes or junk mails.
Thank you
Abdul Kalam

<img
