Old Age Homes..

Today, I visited an old age home running as an NGO in the Kondapur area of Hyderabad, India. A very pleasant environment full of life... Few were moving here and there.. some were sitting under the sun-shine and few were sitting alone reading newspaper or just sitting idle.

I moved inside the NGO premises looking for the administration block or some care taker. And, the reason was to get a chance to interact with them and to do something for them. I had a very clear intention, built by the last night Sakshum's meeting with Janish, Vinayaka, Ajeet and Neeti. That is to find a way for serving these people for their needs. Certainly, we had no money to donate but we were willing to build a long term relationship with such organizations and help them as much as we can.

Anyways, I asked an old man there about the office and he directed me. I moved some 200 meters in the suggested direction and found a block indicating Office. I went inside and peeped in to one of the rooms there. An old lady and an old man were sitting there. They invited me inside. I introduced my self as Vivek, a volunteer of Sakshum. I said "Sakshum is a group of 8-10 dedicated people who are committed to do something good for the society".

She introduced herself as a manager over there and oriented me about old age home. She told me that they are serving around 95 aged people here. She told me, as such they don't need any volunteer services. they are just in short of budget and looking for that. If you guys can help us then we will buy emergency lights and printer for our computer. I was a lil shocked at the reply "as such we don't need any volunteer services..." . But, I was kept listening. She told me that they had good libraries there, full time employees for the care of the residents. But, for all these maintenance they need good money. She continued that they were no profit no loss organization so, they rely on donations only.

I was feeling quite bad the way she was using the word money or donation in her every sentence. I had an impression that probably they don't charge anything from residents. To confirm I asked her that so you don't charge anything from the old people here? And, the reply was..." Nothing is free here...they all pay on monthly basis from their pensions or earned interest from their deposited money in banks etc." I was really thinking hard that what sort of NGO it was? Just a name which is used for extracting money in terms of donations, land from govt and, govt employees for care taking etc.

She asked me about my contact details and said we would contact us in case they need some help. She thanked me for visiting.. I showed my interest about interacting with the people there. She told.. no not required as such as they were already intellectual people and had their own groups. I said fine and came back.

On the way, back to home I was just thinking about it and lost my focus from driving... After I reached home, I called to Janish, Ajeet and others and told about the incidence. Finally, we dropped the plan to visi the old age home in the evening..

Even after sharing this experience a number of times to all the Sakshum volunteers I was still not able to come out of it and thought for blogging....

I am really hurt.. that how things could be exploited on the name of social services....

    Hello Vivek,

Congratulations to you and your team from Sakshum for showing interest in social service.

As regards the old age home in Kondapur (unless it is different from the one you visited), I have positive reports. From what I heard about this home there is a huge demand and a long waiting list to be able to enroll into this home. Many of the residents in this home are in this home only for the reason that they need company of like minded individuals. They are not poor and can afford to 'pay' for the services provided. I think they charge Rs.2,500/= pm per person to cover expenses relating to food served 3 times a day and for general maintenance of the premises. Which I consider is pretty reasonable considering current costs. Further they have to pay a 'capital' charge of Rs. 1,00,000/- for getting a room in the premises.

It is not a surprise that they do not really want any voluntary services as they have full time employees to take care of the daily needs. Any NGO would take donations to give more facilities to their inmates without increasing their costs.

It is not fair on your part to paint a negative image of an organization which is providing a forum to help the old age people to live peacefully and help each other. I would not say that these people are abandoned by their children. It is that they were living a lonely life at their homes as their children are in a different city or country working hard to realize their dreams. I personally know a family in the 50's who have enrolled to join this home when they reach the age of 65(The home is open to people who are above the age of 65 only). They have two daughters one is a practising doctor in the UK and another is a software professional working in Canada. They visualise that they will have a better life living with like minded people who can understand each other better rather than lead a lonely life in a building worth a crore of rupees.

Just because your honorable intention of serving is not fulfilled at this organization the organization does not become bad. I don't think this organization is exploiting anybody or taking undue advantage from the government. Not all people are welcome in this organization nor they have taken up the mantle to provide 'free' services to all old age people. It has been formed with the objective to serve sections of the society who are rich enough to support themselves, however they voluntary decide to lead a life in such homes to have a richer experience by living and sharing their experiences.

There are many other organizations which provide services to the poor and destitute and I am sure that voluntary help from people like you will always be welcome.

    Thanks,

    Best Regards,
    Nagesh Addepalli

Well completely agreed for what you said. Thanks a lot for throwing some light on this face too...

I did not blogged for the intention of putting a bad name to NGO...

The thing that hurt me was the behavior and attitude.. Even for saying no there is way.. a positive way...

Whatever be the situation over use of term donations and money gave me only a bad impression...

    Vivek,

It is admirable that you want to help. I think you happened to pick the wrong place to visit that day. There are many places in the city that could use your services. I recently visited the place in Kondapur and have visited many other places in the city. I have to say the one in Kondapur is far better than all other places I have seen. I spoke with couple of residents and they all raved about the place. I didn't even know that the place was run by NGOs. In fact, it is much more expensive than all other places. Its defenitely not for people who rely just on their pension. Other places literally brought tears to my eyes because of the condition the buildings are in and how hopeless the residents looked. I don't live in India but these places certainly made me think about what I can do for the community/country for the first time in my life.

    Nagesh,

Do you mind share any other info you have on the old age home in kondapur or any other oldage homes (preferably upscale)in the area? I would appreciate your feedback on this. I have a family member who wants to stay in an oldage home. Thanks,
    Asha

    Vivek,

I came across this bolg while researching oldage homes in Hyderabad area. I posted a comment earlier but that was before reading about Sakshum. I appreciate people like you taking the initiative to start an organization and trying to help less fortunate. What you are trying to do is way better than making a donation by writing a check. Inida has changed so much and I see so many people doing better financially but I think the poor are getting poorer.

    Good luck to Sakshum!!

    Asha

  21. Really nice stuff has been posted ! home care Chichester based centers are considered the top old age homes as their seniors are not just given respect but they are given love, affection and care which an elder want in this age. Their dignity and individuality is respected here. Everything has been designed as per their requirements, specifications and needs.

    HI Guys,

I read each and every comments and my final conclusion is without money forgot about a comfort life.but it would be glad if any centers who were giving free service.
@malleswari ..thanks buddy for thinking to take beggars and helpless people from street and put them in oldage homes.
Guys is there any single center where we can found without charge ,no we wont get.People who are saying nothing is free of cost i would like to tell them, man you can start a small scale industries over there in which these people can help you u out in their free time.like this so many things are there from which we can get the budget to run.
I have zero exp in running any cnters or oldage homes...But If I will do then for sure i will look for some other options to give service to them and a smile.
So many rich people are there who were nt happy with der families and want to spend some time with same aged group ppl ..dey will never mind to pay a bit extra for other helpless people.
@ajeesha dear friend no one will cheat people ...may be u didnt came across ppl who r genuinely helping ppls..

Feel the pain in their eyes and give a smile on their face...it will make you feel happy and i m not saying for this you need to go and opena oldage home...look araound you will find so many who want ur help n ur kindness...
AT last thanks Vivek for having this blog...
